Toronto's Elephants Going to PAWS!

For more than a year Zoocheck has been campaigning to finalize the move of Toronto's elephants to the PAWS sanctuary in California. As you know, Toronto City Council voted in October 2011 to send the elephants to the sanctuary. It's been a difficult process rife with challenges, but most of the hurdles are now gone.

On November 27th Toronto City Council reaffirmed, with the passage of some very strong motions, their commitment to act in the best interest of Toronto's elephants by voting overwhelmingly (32 - 8) in favour of sending Toka, Thika and Iringa to the PAWS sanctuary in California.

So November 27th was a great day for the Toronto elephants and for elephants everywhere. What is especially gratifying is that Council didn't buy into the campaign of fear being waged by opponents of the move. Council considered all of the concerns that were raised, including disease, and made the best decision for the elephants.

We would like to thank the many thousands of Toronto residents (and others) and the many experts and organizations who spoke out. And, of course, we would also like to thank the exceptionally thoughtful and compassionate politicians who did their part to give Toka, Thika and Iringa a decent retirement in a natural home.

There are still some challenges ahead, but we're confident the elephants will soon be enjoying their new home at the PAWS sanctuary.
